Prose Poetry

For my final writing course at uni. we learned about prose poetry. Below are my original attempts at such poems. In a few weeks, I will share the rewrites I did to a few of these poems for my final portfolio. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Notes on Happiness

The time you most look forward to in your day. The feeling of joy that keeps you going. You are in a great mood. Ready to conquer the world (or simply your daily list of to-do’s)?

You get a surprise call and hear the voice of a loved one. You get lost in your conversation and talk for hours. Maybe something exciting and different is waiting for you in the mail. Was that item on your wish list? Great! They say a scent can bring you back to memories of times past. What scent brings you back in time? Even a compliment from a stranger makes your day.

The basic things in life can turn a frown upside down. Like mouthwatering and aromatic “thanksgiving day” style food. A long night’s rest, a healthy lifestyle, happy family and friends, being financially well off, or contentment of body, mind, and soul.

Are you happy?

What If...

Imagine if people had animal abilities! What would yours be? Would you use it for good or other means?

If you had a nose like a slippery shark, you could smell the faintest whiff of blood. Making your way to the bleeding victim, you help save a life!

What if you had the beady eyes of a hawk? Without taking your feet off the ground, you could know if a police is miles ahead, waiting to stop you for speeding.

If you were a champion runner like a cheetah, you could stop a robber from making an escape with bags full of cash. A natural born hero, you would be popular and loved.

What if you could camouflage like a chameleon? Blending in with wooded furniture or painted walls, you could eavesdrop in conversations you were never meant to hear!

If humans were more like animals, would life be easier, exciting, or exhausting?

In the Shoes of a Teacher

You have dreamed of being a teacher since you were a child and you finally get the chance. Your first day on the job is here! You are as jumpy as a little kindergartener. As you wait to welcome your new students to their classroom, you look around. You are impressed with the crisp new bulletin boards you decorated and can’t wait to hang up your student’s work. Twenty brand new sharpened pencils are waiting in a cup on your metal desk to be used, a woody smell surrounding them. RINGGGGG! The bell lets you know your time alone is up.

You look forward to going to work every day. Being surrounded by young souls takes years off you as they keep you on the tips of your toes. You spent long hours preparing detailed lessons and gathering materials to better teach your students. You go home feeling satisfied, knowing that you made a positive difference in a child’s life.

Half the school year is over! The initial excitement of running you own classroom starts to fade. You try to recall why you wanted to be a teacher in the first place. “Teachers change the world, one child at a time.” Your professor’s voice plays in the back of your head before you are brought back to reality. “Teacher, may I…” “Teacher, he said a bad word!” “Teacher, is it time to go home yet?” The little ones start to wear you down. You go home with a throbbing headache, dreading the mountain of papers waiting to be looked through. Pain relievers become your new best friend.

It is the last day of school! You count down the hours before summer vacation. Your students enjoy themselves at the goodbye party you threw them. As much as you are looking forward to sunny days on the beach and cold drinks with family and friends, the year wasn’t all bad. A smile spreads across your face as you think about how much your students have grown and changed. A few come up and give you goodbye presents, chocolate smeared around their lips. You give them a quick hug in return. RINGGGGG! The bell lets you know your time together is up.

Counting Days

The initial feeling of joy has finally faded. You knew this would happen eventually, like the 7 times before. Letting out a groan, you think of how you will survive. You realize you won’t have much of a personal life after long hard days of work and classes. A tear tries to escape your eyes as you try not to have a mental breakdown.

Blurry-eyed, you look at your bright yellow Post- it notes sticking to your wall. The number 32 stares back at you. Your heart beats a little faster as if running a marathon as you think about graduation. “You deserve this special moment as you stand amongst fellow graduates,” you’ve been told. You will finally have time to take a breath and enjoy life after so long. You could spend more time being a new aunt, entertain yourself staying up late watching movies, or go back to reading a book you can’t put down. Distractions would be welcomed and responsibilities would be pushed aside. Just for a while…

“Take it one day at a time” you tell yourself. You sigh as you head off to bed, marking another day conquered and more to come. Your head touches down on your personal cloud as you easily fall off to sleep.

Booboo

“A baby changes everything…. except for their own diapers!” It has been 10 weeks since you’ve changed my life. Because of you, I went from an “aunt” to khalamoni*.

I look forward to coming home after an exhausting day to see you. You are already active like a volcano! As you twist and turn in my arms, I admire a gift from God. Those plump cheeks always beg for a kiss. I make silly sounds to listen to your baby music. Somehow, you can make a dimple in your right eyebrow appear with a look of curiosity.

You suddenly scream your lungs out, tiny tears escaping your eyes. Are you hungry? Do you need a fresh diaper? Are you tired? Did you imagine a scary monster? I pass my hand through your thin black hair to comfort you. As you lay in my arms, I gently rub your forehead up and down. Within a few minutes, your eyes begin to close.

I close the nursery door behind me and hear a little laugh! I check on you and see a smile on your face, your eyes still closed.

* an affectionate (Bengali) word for aunt

Now What?

You’ve counted down the days until graduation on your planner. Now that it is here, you wonder if it’s all just a dream. You sit in a daze amongst other graduates, proudly wearing your black and orange gown.

Fast forward 7 hours later when all the exciting partying with family and friends comes to an end. Now what?

Do you extend the fun by taking a vacation to Brazil? You imagine all the colorful and breathtaking scenes and exotic wildlife you have come to love thanks to Rio. You might even see a rare blue macaw!

Do you continue searching for a job, like a predator hunting its prey? After all, you did just go through what felt like centuries of studying and completing assignments to be financially independent.

There is the option of going back to school as some have suggested. Scratch that! A minor earthquake in your head starts to form just at the thought of more sleepless nights.

You consider all your options as you get into your pajamas and head to the bathroom. As you brush and floss your teeth, you come to a temporary solution.

“I’ll worry about this in the morning!”

By the Pen by Ibrahim Jaaber

I mentioned Ibrahim Jaaber in a blog post a few months back (you can check that post here). I got his book of poems and wanted to do a quick review. It is a short book, but I wanted to share my thoughts on it.

This book has 11 poems by Ibrahim Jaaber. I personally like 7 of them. About 3 of them are available in video format on YouTube. For those interested in more video poems by him or to get an idea of his poetry, you can go to https://www.youtube.com/user/gijaaber/videos Many of the poems rhyme, which if you know my taste for poetry by now, I love rhymes. Some of the poems are a few pages long which I am fine with. Arabic verses from the Quran related to the theme of the poems are provided directly after each poem. The only negative thing that I noticed about By the Pen were the typos. They didn't take away from the content of the poems, so this wasn't a major issue.

If you are a fan of Islamic poetry or Ibrahim Jaaber, I think this book would make a great addition to your library. This is one of my favorite book of poems that I own! I gave this poem 5/5 stars. To order a copy of By the Pen, please go to http://www.amazon.com/The-Pen-Mr-Ibrahim-Jaaber/dp/1505500869

A-Z Poetry by Me: L

I haven't written a poem in a long time, especially for fun, so I thought I would start again. I left off on the letter F and wanted to go in order, but got stuck on some letters. If you would like to see my previous poems, please go here http://sfraww.blogspot.com/2013/09/a-z-poetry-by-me-intro.html Please also take the 2 little surveys on the right side :)

I know this poem needs improvement, but I thought this could be my 1st "draft". Hope you still enjoy it :)

Love

Courage to stand up to save a life
Sacrifices by parents for their children
Respect and friendship between husband and wife

For God and all His creation
Sharing and caring for those in need
No matter their color, gender, or nation

Sought out in people, wealth, power, and fame
The subject of books, movies, and songs
The cause of silly actions in its name

Love: the search of a lifetime

A-Z Poetry by Me: F

Family Comes First

We take our family
                               for granted.
The ones who knew us
                                     since birth.
Parents who fed, clothed, and sheltered
                                                               Us.
Who lost sleep and comfort
                                            to make us happy.
Who held our hands to teach us
                                                  to walk.
Whose ears were opened to hear
                                                   us talk.

How about
                   our siblings?
The ones we argued with
                                        about nothing
                                                              of importance.
And fought with
                           about everything.
Yet somehow we made up and
                                                 went back to play.
Played pretend and board games
till the end of the day.

Some of us go to friends before family
                                                             for advice, comfort, and support.
Not realizing
                     family comes first.

A-Z Poetry by Me: E

Elegy to Childhood

Childhood: years of innocence, adventure, play,
No responsibilities, free time galore, and cheerful every day.

Sunny days riding bikes with friends and family picnics at the park,
Imagination running wild, making shadow puppets in the dark.

Running wild outside flying kites and playing tag,
Looking forward to school in your new outfit and bookbag.

No dreaded days at school of bullying and thoughts of suicide,
No pressure of where you want to be in 15+ years as the days pass by.

The days pass by watching PBSKids, a child of seven by Generation O,
But times have changed and so has PBSKids Go!

Times have changed you realize one day,
And childhood isn't looked at in the same way.

Children are growing up and learning much faster,
Gone are the many innocent days of fun and laughter.

A-Z Poetry by Me: B

Books in Bed

To my beloved comrade Book,
Over ten years you have been a companion of mine,
Your many subjects reel in bookworms like a hook,
Sci-Fi/ Fantasy and more to choose from throughout time,
Where should we start to take a look?

Your crisp, new pages waiting to be read,
Or maybe yellowing leafs shown much love instead,
You fill wooden shelves with your family and friends,
In public and private lives, some in heartthrobs till the end.

But who doesn't like a first-class book in bed?
After a hard daydreams work and faces turned red,
Come under a warm blanket on an arctic winter night,
Lay down and give thanks for your soft pillow so light,
Thank God for books and beds, rest well and sleep tight!

A-Z Poetry by Me: A

Allah

He is the Most...
Merciful to give us another chance,
Forgiving for all sins except polytheism,
Generous in His gifts (1) even to sinners,
More Loving than a mother to her child (2).
So don't complain of your wishes not immediately granted.
Rather, be thankful of your sins not immediately punished.

Allah is One without partners or son (Quran:112),
He is the Creator of everything we benefit from (3),
The Provider and Sustainer for all living creatures we see,
And the BEST Protector for you and me.

He is the Most Powerful and Just,
Most Wise with knowledge of the Unseen (4),
THE King of kings, Resurrector (Quran 36:78-79), and Owner of Judgment Day.
Life is not guaranteed, but death is certain.
Your life will flash before your eyes, so make sure it is worth it.

I call Him Allah,
You may call Him God.
We should learn about Him,
Acknowledge and believe in His existence,
Live by His standards and obey His commands,
For our own good (5) in this life and the next.

The Story Behind this Poem

I have been wanting to learn more about the names and attributes of Allah (God) and while on my search, I came across certain verses from the Quran and authentic sayings (Hadith) of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) that grabbed my attention. Some of these are listed above. I saved these and initially wanted to work on a "book" where I put down verses and sayings that I felt really described each of Allah's 99 names and attributes that would be easy to understand and remember, almost children-friendly (since I couldn't find one already available). Only time will tell if this book will happen. For now, I thought a general poem about Allah, including some of His names and attributes that are my favorites, will due. And what better way to start my recent A-Z Poetry by Me Project than with Allah for the letter A! Anyways, I hope you enjoy this and look forward to more poems to come in this series :)

A-Z Poetry by Me: Intro.

I got the idea of a poetry project after coming across Fida Islaih's blog a few weeks ago. It is called A to Z Poetry. I don't know why I never thought of this before, being a fan of poetry myself, but with writer's block for a long time...

I will try my best to write poems in different forms for every letter of the alphabet, i.e. the significant theme, item, or word basically has to start with a letter from A-Z. I came up with some (general) ideas which I will share below so you get an idea of what I mean exactly. These may change eventually, but this is what I plan to write about for now. Some may be familiar to you already ;)

I would also like help from you on ideas for letters I left blank. As you will see, there are a number of blanks, so I am bound to pick something you suggest ;) I want to write about (nouns) that have meaning to me or that I have words to share on the subject. So far, below is what I could come up with. Finally, I encourage you to join in and share some of your poetry too :)

Once I get each poem posted, I will directly link them here for easier access. Here is my list!

Poem Rewrites

I had to rewrite 3 of my poems for my Intro. to Creative Writing class final portfolio, so I thought I would put up the changes here. Let me know if you like the originals better or the edited ones :)

#1 Ode to a Good Book in Bed
original @ http://sfraww.blogspot.com/2013/01/ode-to-good-book-in-bed.html

To my beloved comrade Book,
Over ten years you have been a companion of mine,
Your many subjects reel in bookworms like a hook,
Sci-Fi/ Fantasy and more to choose from throughout time,
Where should we start to take a look?

Your crisp, new pages waiting to be read,
Or maybe yellowing leafs shown much love instead,
You fill wooden shelves with your family and friends,

#2 Most Influential Person in History
original @ http://sfraww.blogspot.com/2013/02/most-influential-person-in-history.html

Who deserves to be ranked #1
of the most influential people in history?
Would you give the title to Einstein, your daughter or son?
I promise, it's really not a mystery!

Before the great men and women in time
are given credit or praise,
Mothers should be first in line,
For these individuals they raised.

We all recognize the respect our mothers deserve,
And would even fight others to defend them,
But then where do we get the nerve,
To ignore, hurt, or even curse at some?

For giving birth to you and the pain they went through,
The time and effort they put in,
Raising, teaching, and taking care of you,
Disobeying them in good is a great sin! (1)

You love her home cooked chicken, comfort, and advice,
There is almost nothing she wouldn’t do for you,
The least you could do is be helpful and nice,
Like do all your chores and hers too.

Mothers deserve the best for these reasons and many others,
You will never be able to pay her back for all she has done,
It's been said, "No matter what a man does, he will never be able to have the status of a mother,"
And that's why she is #1!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(1) In Islam, when parents advise something good according to God, we should try our best to do so. Likewise, when they tell us something that we shouldn't do because God said so, it is not a sin to not listen to them. For example, if they remind one to pray and one doesn’t, one is sinning. But, if they tell one to take off their head scarf, then one shouldn’t and isn't considered sinful.

#3 Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall, Who's the Prettiest of Them All?
original @ http://sfraww.blogspot.com/2013/03/mirror-mirror-on-wall-whos-ugliest-of.html

Look in the mirror,
What do you see?
Eyes focused on imperfections,
Standing out so clearly.

You think you are too Fat,
Skinny, TALL, short, black, or white,
Small eyes, big nose,
Hair somehow not right.

Criticizing and putting yourself down,
Comparing yourself to others,
Too busy changing appearances,
Rather than the inside which matters.

TV and magazines make you feel insecure,
You’re constantly told what to do,
To attract attention and “enjoy” life,
But you should really be true to You.

Appreciate your functioning body,
And nice-looking features,
Love and respect yourself first,
Because we are God's special creatures.

Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall, Who's the Ugliest of Them All?!

My last poem written for my Intro. to Creative Writing class.

Look in the mirror,
What do you see?
Eyes focused on imperfections,
Standing out so clearly.

You think you are too Fat,
Skinny, TALL, short, black, or white,
Small eyes, big nose,
Hair somehow not right.

Criticizing and putting yourself down,
Comparing yourself to others,
Too busy changing appearances,
Rather than the inside which matters.

The media makes you feel insecure,
You’re constantly told what to do,
To attract attention and “enjoy” life,
But you should really be true to You.

Love and respect yourself first,
Then you’ll get it in return,
Be attractive on the outside and in,
This we should all learn!

Cycle of Seasons

Another poem I wrote for my Intro. to Creative Writing class. I wanted to try writing a haiku and a poem about the seasons, so I combined the two. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Enjoy ;)

Winter's cold weather,
Bring families together,
For fun in the snow.

Flowers bloom in Spring,
Colors and new life all sing,
Lovely scene for all.

Summer's warm sunlight,
The ocean's sunrise so bright,
Put smiles on faces.

Leaves in Autumn fall,
Raked in one big pile so tall,
To jump in with joy.

All the four seasons,
With their good and bad reasons,
Are part of our world!

Ode to a Good Book in Bed

I just wrote this a few days ago for my Intro. to Creative Writing class. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Enjoy ;)

To my dear friend book,
Over 10 years you have been a companion of mine,
Your many subjects reel in bookworms like a hook,
Hundreds of topics and genres to choose from throughout time,
Where should we start to take a look?

Your crisp, new pages waiting to be read,
Or maybe yellowing pages shown much love instead,
You fill bookshelves with your family and friends,
In public and private libraries, some in hearts till the end.

But who doesn't like a good book in bed?
After a hard days work and face turned red,
Come under a warm, cozy blanket on a cold winter night,
Lay down and give thanks for your soft pillow so light,
Thank God for books and beds, rest well and sleep tight!

A Teacher Worth Remembering

A poem I wrote before I graduated dedicated to my high school teachers.

Here is a little something
From me to you
For a very special teacher
I believe this is all true

You have taught me so much
I learned new things from you
Your dedication and hard work
Clearly shines through

Thank you for all you have done for me
I enjoyed the times spent with you
Teachers really do make a difference
I will always remember what they do!

*Surprise!* Please Don’t Pity Me

A poem I wrote just yesterday so I thought I would share it since its new ;)

I intended to write about those I pitied, but ended up writing for those who pity me. This is similar to my poem “Media’s Message of Islam,” but more personal. I notice people acting in ways that I took as pitying me, which I don’t want. I do have a say in how I choose to live my life and making my own decisions. This is for those individuals who make such assumptions of Muslims, particularly female Muslims, and Islam in general.

I know you pity me,
I can see it in your face,
The reason is clear to see,
What a disgrace!

You make judgments on how I live,
With your limited knowledge of me,
I am a proud female Muslim,
But most importantly, I am free. (1)

To your surprise, I know English, (I do understand your rude comments)
I was born and raised in this country too,
And just because I am a girl,
Doesn’t mean I can’t choose what I want to do.

I have goals like many others,
Things in life I want to achieve,
Get my degree, write, and teach,
Are just some on my list of “I Believe.” (2)

And for your information…

Being Muslim doesn’t mean I am Arab,
Islam isn’t strict like you think, (3)
Nor does it preach hate and violence,
Admit it, my life doesn’t actually stink!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(1) I am thankful for being a Muslim and being able to follow Islam freely. As a female Muslim, I am not oppressed nor do I feel inferior to anyone. Islam is not responsible for the people who claim to be followers, but don't practice Islam correctly and follow their desires, culture, traditions, etc. that actually go against Islam. Wearing a headscarf (hijab in Arabic) doesn't limit me from doing the things I want for an enjoyable life since I do have rights (and responsibilities) that Allah (God in Arabic) gave to female Muslims since the beginning of Islam. Because of wearing a headscarf, decent people also respect me for who I am and not what I look like, nor do I have to worry about getting unwanted attention.

(2) “I Believe I Can” or “My Top 10 List of Future Achievements” includes finishing college, working as a teacher, and traveling, amongst many other life goals. And yes, unlike what many may think and what some “Muslims” say and do, females can drive, get an education and go to college, and also work and finance their own money!

Media’s Message of Islam

My poem entry for the Islamic Writers Alliance 5th Annual Poetry Contest (2009)

Many false things have been said about the religion Islam and its followers, Muslims, by the unhelpful portrayal of the media. Do you let others think and judge for you or not?

Why do you judge my people by looks?
We’ve all heard to not do the same to books,
You assume things by the actions of “Muslims by name”,
To some, when it comes to Islam, it’s all a game.

Maybe it’s because of what you’ve heard or seen,
The media is all for making Muslims sound mean,
You publicize the bad acts and even make up your own,
You start trouble to hurt Muslims both young and grown.

You hear of women covered from head to toe,
You call them oppressed but you really don’t know,
We do it to dress modestly, please Allah, and follow his command,
We won’t give in to your unfair and dirty demands.

Maybe you’ve seen men with kufis on their head,
“Going to the Masjid (mosque) to teach violence,” the media says,
Or, perhaps Muslim men growing a beard and wearing Islamic clothes,
Facing Makkah for prayers lined up in straight rows.

You call us dangerous, crazy, and lame,
But, in some ways it brought Islam great fame,
After 9/11 more people became curious of Islam and to learn the truth,
It even reached the ears of some of the youth.

Bringing reverts to Islam, believers of its message so true,
Since then, the numbers of Muslims worldwide grew,
InshAllah (God willing) Islam will rise like the past to see the light,
So, to the ones who slander Islam, please stop the fight!

So Much to be Thankful For

Piece I wrote for a song writing contest in the summer of 2008. This was inspired by Ahmed Bukhatir's "Forgive Me."

For the people who don't take the time to think how much they have to be thankful for. A reminder for others as well as myself.

Look at you sitting there on your couch staring at your flat screen TV,
Dressed from head to toe with clothes priced high enough to clothe the poor,
You live in style yet so much more you desire not even thinking about me (unfortunate ones),
You see, while you sit there you don’t think that you have so much to be thankful for.

You eat till you’re full, you even throw away food,
This can be given to charity to feed the poor,
But still you’re in a tempered mood,
You see, while you sit there you don’t think that you have so much to be thankful for.

You live in a beautiful house with four walls and a roof to cover your head,
You raise buildings to the sky where the money can be used to shelter the poor,
You’re living in peace and comfort, but still you are not satisfied while sleeping in bed,
You see, while you sit there you don’t think that you have so much to be thankful for.

You enjoy holidays and vacations with loving family and friends,
While the ones living through deaths are living like the poor,
Yet complaining you are bored not thinking when lives will end,
You see, while you sit there you don’t think that you have so much to be thankful for.

You have a body with five working senses and everything intact,
Which can be used to help the less fortunate who are looked at as the poor,
Just to fit in with the crowd you want to change your looks and act,
You see, while you sit there you don’t think that you have so much to be thankful for.

You were born with everything you need to help you be the best in this life and the hereafter,
Fortunate it was you who was given a chance and whose soul didn’t soar,
While you’re here, help those who need it the most for them to join in your laughter,
You see, while you sit there you don’t think that you have so much to be thankful for.
